North Durban Lions collect dresses and suits for matrics in need

North Durban Lion Rowena Bosman is blown away by the generosity of those who have donated so far – but there is still the need for more, especially garments for the young men.

IT goes without saying that every learner who is able to attend their matric dance would like to do so in style.

The sad reality, however, is that not all of them have the financial means to have dresses and suits designed or even hired for their special occasion.

When Rowena Bosman moved to Durban North from East London, she knew she wanted to start a project to assist young women and men in making their matric dance dreams come true.

“When I lived in East London, I was a member of the Port Rex Lions, so when I moved to Durban North, I joined the North Durban Lions and introduced the Papillon Project with assistance from other Lions. It’s an existing project which we ran in East London, and I am in the process of reviving it here in Durban North,” said Bosman.

“I often come across young ladies who need a special outfit and they can’t afford one. We help discreetly as we don’t want anyone to feel shy or embarrassed to ask for help,” she added.

The aim is to dress 80 young women and men, but if there’s room to assist more, it will definitely be done.

Bosman said she was in awe of the Durban North community at how forthcoming they have been in donating dresses, accessories and the like.

“I am so blown away by the generosity of the residents, and we, as the North Durban Lions, thank everyone who has contributed to the project. The majority of donations have been dresses, but I also urge community members to donate suits, shirts, pants, accessories, shoes and the like,” said Bosman.

To donate to this cause, WhatsApp Bosman on 083 786 9645. Items can be dropped off at Bosman’s residence in Durban North.
