Dolphins women make history

The Dolphins beat the Lions by 25 runs in Johannesburg in order to be crowned champions and claim the first piece of silverware for Dolphins women’s cricket.

THE Hollywoodbets Dolphins women’s team made history recently by being crowned Cricket South Africa (CSA) Women’s One Day Cup champions in the inaugural season of the CSA Professional Domestic Women’s League.

The professionalisation of the Women’s League came on the heels of the immense success of the Protea Women’s team in recent ICC World Cups, highlighting the growing momentum and interest in women’s cricket.

In their final game of the season (April 13), the Dolphins beat the Lions by 25 runs in Johannesburg in order to be crowned champions and claim the first piece of silverware for Dolphins women’s cricket.

Reflecting on the season and their achievement, the Dolphins women’s team coach, Angelique Taai, heaped praise on her charges.

“I mentioned during the last week that this has been coming for a while. We have been working very hard for three years to get to this point, so we weren’t surprised by our achievement. The team has been incredible in their preparation and execution of our plans throughout the competition. To be the 50-over competition champions is a massive achievement, and the team can be incredibly proud of all of their efforts,” she said.

The Dolphins won six of their 10 matches that they played and lost just two matches throughout the competition with two no-results.

The consistency of the side in 50-over cricket has been the highlight for the coach.

“We’ve stuck to our processes, and that has shown in our results throughout the season. We’ve been very good across the board, and being on top of our game for such a long period of time has been very satisfying. We know that there are many areas of our game that we need to work hard on, but to taste some silverware will give the team a lot of confidence going into next season,” she said.

The Dolphins, across both the men’s and the women’s side, continue to impress nationally, and for CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom, the women’s team has come very far in such a short period of time.

“To think that our women’s side wasn’t in the top tier of women’s cricket not that long ago just shows how far this group has come. They have worked extremely hard and deserve every accolade they have received. We would like to congratulate coach Angelique Taai and her team on an incredible achievement and wish them all the best for next season,” he said.
