Youngsters called to learn music in uMhlanga

Moodliar has also initiated a fun musical challenge where families choose their favourite Ed Sheeran song tp sing with their families.

AN uMhlanga-based music teacher believes that almost every child has a musical talent that lies dormant in them, waiting for it to be discovered and embraced.

For this reason, Joshua Moodliar, director of Expressive Arts College, is offering free music lessons to 50 children over the age of three for the months of April and May.

“After teaching more than 700 kids to play music in about one and a half decades, I found something interesting. I realised that kids today have this hidden and sleeping gift for playing music. That when we actually tap into it, they unleash a really creative side to them. I found it is one of the greatest investments parents can give their children. This is the reason I went all-in to provide these free music lessons – to give children the chance to find their gift and experiment with their talents,” he said.

For as long as he can remember, music has always been a part of his life.

“I lost my mum at the age of eight, and she inspired me to learn music just before she passed away. This put me on a path of not just developing my creative side but on a journey to help children to learn and play music on the greatest of stages,” he added.

Moodliar has a different approach to teaching his students – by combining one-on-one lessons with band lessons.

Piano, guitar, drums, vocals and more will be taught on any day of the week or weekends at 15 Zenith Drive, uMhlanga.

Another fun musical challenge for families to get involved in is the Ed Sheeran Challenge which Moodliar initiated where families choose their favourite Ed Sheeran song, attend a free class and perform it with family.

“A few weeks ago, while teaching a student a song in class, I saw her become bored and demotivated, fed up and wanting to go home to say the least. So, I threw away the song chart and started teaching her the song, thinking out loud. I saw her face light up, voice get louder, her energy increase and passion soar. We were so excited, and by the end of the lesson, she played the song perfectly and fluently in front of her mum and siblings and left us in awe,” she said.

This is when Moodliar realised that if his students are taught the songs they want to play – the songs they love and listen to every day – extraordinary things will happen.

“The challenge here is for the students and parents to learn the Ed Sheeran song in three to four lessons. Then, we perform it with the band,” he added.
