Woman robbed and pushed off bridge into Umgeni River

The woman was rescued by members of the Metro Police Search and Rescue.

A WOMAN, believed to be in her 60s, was rescued after allegedly being robbed and pushed off the Athlone Bridge the Umgeni River on Wednesday evening.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they responded to the near-drowning incident just after 18:15.

“Paramedics arrived on scene to find Metro Police Search and Rescue in attendance. Paramedics were shown to a woman who alleges that whilst walking along Athlone Drive she was robbed and then pushed off the bridge into the fast flowing Umgeni River below.

“Metro Police Search and Rescue division were able to rescue the lady and brought her to safety. She was treated for moderate injuries by ALS Paramedics before she was transported to a hospital. Metro Police and SAPS will be investigating this incident,” he said.
