Kenville ratepayers’ body urges truck drivers to watch their height
This comes after two separate incidents occurred involving trucks that got stuck under the bridge on Temple Road and Sea Cow Lake Road.
THE Kenville and Sea Cow Lake Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association has urged drivers, particularly of heavy-duty vehicles like trucks, to be wary of and to check height restrictions before entering narrow passages and low bridges.
This comes after two separate incidents occurred involving trucks that got stuck under the bridge on Temple Road and Sea Cow Lake Road.
In both cases, the trucks had to be towed out which also negatively impacted traffic in the area.
Chairperson of the ratepayers’ body, Anil Beekrum, said the two recent incidents had also brought into sharp focus the need for height restriction signs in the area.
He also added that some of the roads in the area were being damaged due to trucks using residential roads.
“Many of the residential roads in the Kenville area are old and weren’t built to accommodate heavy vehicles. There are two low railway bridges on Valley Road and Temple Road which could pose an issue for a truck driver who is either lost or looking to take a shortcut. We do feel that, with all the construction work on the go, some drivers are taking ‘shortcuts’ which inevitably leads them onto the residential roads.
“Of course, we aren’t saying trucks shouldn’t operate at all, but they also have to use roads that are designated for them. I also feel for drivers who may be led through an area incorrectly by their GPS, but we’ve got to see more law enforcement to address the situation. I will be addressing the issue in our next ratepayers’ meeting. I also feel these two incidents highlight the need for height-restriction signs which the eThekwini Municipality needs to put in place. We are still looking at how the incident on Sea Cow Lake Road occurred,” he said.
