Durban North siblings share in the mini fun

Checkers Little Shop 4 came to an end on Friday. The Northglen News caught up with avid collector to find out what she loved about the latest promotion and the mini products.

BROTHERS Darren (10) and Chad Sharp (11) are also mini fanatics, having just ‘nearly’ completed their Checkers Little Shop Collection 4 in the nick of time.

Mini fans are sad that the promotion ends on November 10, however, many stores have already run out and won’t be restocking.

The Sharp brothers have two collections to their name, and just like other collectors, can’t wait for the next one. They completed Little Shop Collection 3 back in 2020 and now are negotiating really hard to complete the fourth. All that’s missing is the famous pink trolley.

“We started collecting at the beginning of September. My favourite one is the Oros bottle,” said Chad while Darren prefers the debit card and airfryer.

“The hardest one and the last one for us to find is the trolley, and we know that if we don’t find it, the collection will remain incomplete because nobody is going to trade us for the extras we have,” said Chad.

The duplicates were taken to school where the boys traded with friends. Once Checkers Little Shop 4 is complete, it will proudly be displayed on their bedroom shelf.

Mom Nadine said it was such a whirlwind at home when the Checkers Sixty60 driver arrived with a delivery.
“All of a sudden, the boys are super eager to help with groceries,” she says with a laugh.

The trouble came in when an odd number of minis arrived, and there was always a debate as to who would get the extra one.

“It has been much excitement when the driver arrives, which often takes a diplomatic approach between the children and me as to who gets to open the most when we receive an odd number of minis,” she added.

Checkers managers say the craze at the store has pretty much been the same as in households as customers were so excited over the little shop.

“There was so much excitement from our customers who eagerly came to exchange their duplicates on swop days, making it easier to get the ones they couldn’t previously find and complete their sets,” said Daphne Naidoo, branch manager at Checkers Virginia Circle.

Varesh Haridass, branch manager at Checkers FX Oceans Mall, said that surprisingly, the adults were more excited than the children, especially with the fun new features – including scratch-and-sniff, glow-in-the-dark and sparkle.

“The pink Discovery Vitality trolley, the air fryer and the Showmax TV were the most popular. They were so popular that customers were even rounding up their purchases to ensure they get minis,” he said.
