Greenwood Park community march against Gender-Based Violence
Members of the Greenwood Park CPF sub-forum 2 along with residents walked through several streets in the neighbourhood to show their solidarity with victims of GBV.
MEMBERS of Greenwood Park CPF Sub-Forum 2, as well as the Greenwood Park community, took to the streets on Saturday to protest against gender-based violence and call for an end to violence against women and children.
The sub-forum held a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awareness Walk to take a stand united against GBV.
Chairperson of Sub-Forum 2, Danusha Makan-Maharaj, explained that the march was to take a meaningful step towards creating a safer, more compassionate community.

“To address the scourge against GBV actively and to challenge harmful norms and behaviour, we decided to host a community walk. Although we didn’t have as many people join our walk [as we’d hoped], we felt our message was received. We plan to make this an annual event, especially as a way of showing our care and support to victims of GBV. There are also three members from our team who are training to become trauma counsellors so we can offer support to those in need.
“We are also working on a project to upgrade the trauma room at Greenwood Park Police Station, which is one of the decisions we’ve undertaken to take a stand. We have also seen a more cohesive approach with various role-players involved. We hope to encourage those who’ve experienced GBV to speak out openly. We hoped that this march was one way to raise awareness, foster support and take a meaningful step towards creating a safer, more compassionate community.”
