Report crime, urges security company after theft on uMhlanga Beach

Even if there is a positive outcome following a crime incident, it's important to still report the matter to the local police.

A CELLPHONE theft incident on uMhlanga Beach was resolved within minutes yesterday after the device was found and returned to its owner.

Marshall Security was quick to respond and resolve the matter, however, no case was opened.

Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell urges the public – as the school holidays approach and the festive season goes into full swing – to report crime to the nearest police station even if the situation has been diffused.

“The theft occurred on the beach, but thanks to the swift action and seamless coordination of Marshall Security’s team, the suspect was tracked and apprehended shortly after the incident. The stolen cellphone was recovered, ensuring a quick resolution to the matter,” he said.

“No formal case was opened by the victim in this instance. While the recovery of stolen property is a positive outcome, the absence of a case limits the ability of law enforcement to take further legal action against the suspect,” added Powell.

He said that not opening a case with the South African Police Service (SAPS) means that suspects cannot face the full might of the law, allowing the cycle of crime to continue.

“Suspects cannot be prosecuted, and the cycle of criminal activity may continue unchecked. Reporting a crime is a critical step in ensuring that justice is served. It also contributes to crime statistics, enabling law enforcement to allocate resources more effectively to problem areas,” he said.

He urged all residents to remain vigilant and report dangerous or suspicious activity, especially as silly season is near.

“Proactive community involvement, coupled with timely reporting and case registration, plays a crucial role in keeping our neighbourhoods safe,” said Powell.
