The magic of an African Christmas in uMhlanga

These unique pieces beautifully reflect South African culture, offering a memorable and festive atmosphere this holiday season

THE African spirit of Christmas is evident at Oceans Mall where non-profit organisation Woza Moya has created and placed three oversized baubles around the mall, each wrapped in their own ethnic prints.

Woza Moya is the economic empowerment initiative of the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust, established in 2002 to reduce poverty through craft.

The first of its kind creation includes a surfing snowman, also created by the talented women who are supported by Woza Moya.

“These one-of-a-kind decorations embody the creativity and spirit of South African culture, offering mall visitors a vibrant and meaningful experience this holiday season. This collaboration not only provides income to the artisans but also gives them a platform to share their skills and stories with a broader audience,” said S’phume Khuzwayo, general manager for the mall.

As a journalist, I am forever the favourer of the underdog. When I am not penning the latest human interest piece, crime or municipal bit, and occasionally a sports update, you can find me in the place I love most – at home with my beautiful family – cooking up a storm, soaking up the sun with a gin and tonic in hand or binge-watching a good series or documentary.
