Extreme heat leads to substation fires in north Durban

Repairs and electricity restoration times have also been affected in several areas.

RISING temperatures have affected electricity supply to several areas across eThekwini including Greenwood Park and the Izinga Ridge area.

Substations in both Ward 34 and Ward 35 have caught on fire due to the heatwave.

In a response to Ward 35 councillor, Bradley Singh, the eThekwini Municipality said the current heatwave has led to electrical network experiencing multiple faults.

“There is an electricity outage impacting areas of Izinga due to a fire at a substation. The city is facing multiple outages, with several substations catching fire, which is contributing to widespread disruptions,” Singh said.

The widespread disruptions were later confirmed as the city said additional repair teams have been deployed to assist with network repairs.

“We are systematically addressing the faults, attending to affected areas in the order they were reported. Due to the higher volume of faults, restoration times will be longer than usual,” the city’s response to Singh read.

The eThekwini Municipality’s Facebook page also has a list of several areas without electricity.
