KZN Premier condemns kidnap and murder of young woman

The 37-year-old suspect was allegedly her manager at work and is facing several charges, including defeating the ends of justice.

KWAZULU-NATAL Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, has condemned the kidnap and murder of a 23-year-old woman who was last seen in uMhlanga on Christmas Day.

Ayabonga Mjilo was last seen leaving a restaurant in the area with a male companion.

After she failed to return home, a case of kidnapping was opened by her family.

On Saturday (January 4), KZN police arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the murder as evidence revealed that Mjilo had been taken to the suspect’s home in Amaotana, Inanda.

KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said investigations showed that the suspect was known to the victim.

“During the investigations it was discovered that the man, who was her manager at work, took her to his home at Amaotana area in Inanda. The two reportedly had an altercation and the man allegedly strangled her to death and buried her body in his yard,” Netshiunda said.

Premier Ntuli called the crime ‘heinous’ and called for justice for Mjilo.

“The brutal killing of Ayabonga Mjilo is a stark reminder of the work that lies ahead in our mission to end gender-based violence. I commend the SAPS for their tireless efforts and urge the judiciary to impose the harshest possible punishment for such heinous crimes. KwaZulu-Natal has no place for individuals who commit these atrocities.”

We stand in solidarity with the family as they mourn this heartbreaking loss, and we will continue to support them as they seek justice.”

The suspect is set to appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday (January 6) and is facing charges of kidnapping, murder, and defeating the ends of justice.
