Preparing for the 2025 academic year: key developmental areas for learners

Child and youth care practitioner Zonke Shazi-Hlongwane shares expert tips to set your child on the path to a successful school career.

AS the 2025 South African academic calendar kicks off on Wednesday, January 15, parents and learners are gearing up for a year of new opportunities and challenges. With some learners transitioning to new phases in their school careers like primary and high school, preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and successful academic journey ahead. Zonke Shazi-Hlongwane, a child and youth care practitioner, highlights three crucial developmental domains that can help learners thrive in the coming year.

Emotional Resilience: Building a strong inner foundation

Starting a new academic year, especially in a new environment, can bring about feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. Emotional resilience is crucial for helping children navigate these changes. Shazi-Hlongwane emphasises the importance of self-awareness and emotional regulation, which enable learners to manage their emotions during challenging situations like bullying or self-doubt.

“Teaching children to adapt to new teachers, schedules, and structures is vital. They also need to develop decision-making skills and the ability to form healthy friendships. Emotional support from parents can empower children to face new challenges with confidence,” she stated.

Social Skills: Navigating peer dynamics

Social skills are essential for children to successfully integrate into their school communities. Shazi-Hlongwane points out that learners must be able to set boundaries as these are key components of social preparedness.

“Children should feel confident when introducing themselves and interacting with peers. It’s important for them to understand how to establish personal boundaries and avoid being swayed by negative influences. Additionally, they need to be aware of potential risks, such as grooming by inappropriate adults.”

Academic Readiness: laying the groundwork for success

The start of a new academic year offers a fresh opportunity for learners to adopt productive habits. Shazi-Hlongwane underscores the significance of academic readiness, which includes developing routines that promote responsibility and accountability.

“New habits can create positive neural pathways that support long-term academic success. Simple steps like organising stationery, preparing uniforms, and planning around new timetables can instill a sense of responsibility. These practices help learners take charge of their academic journey and set the stage for excellence,” she said.

As the new school year approaches, focusing on emotional resilience, social skills, and academic readiness can provide learners with the tools they need to succeed. By supporting their children in these key areas, parents can help create a foundation for a positive and rewarding academic experience in 2025.
