Man nabbed with 5G equipment in Mount Edgecombe

Armed response officers knew something was amiss when they saw the man walking down Flander's Drive with electronic equipment belonging to a cellphone tower.

A ROUTINE patrol by a security company led to a suspect being apprehended for possession of suspected stolen property on Flanders Drive in Mount Edgecombe last Wednesday.

Armed response officers from Marshall Security noticed a man carrying electronic equipment, and since the area is experiencing an issue with theft the special operations team questioned him.

After searching the pedestrian, they discovered 5G Base Station Communication devices typically used in cellphone towers.

“The equipment showed clear signs of tampering – cables had been cut, and the brackets securing the devices had been forcefully broken. When questioned, the suspect was unable to provide a reasonable explanation as to how he came into possession of the items,” said Marshall Security spokesperson, Tyron Powell.

The officers apprehended the individual and contacted Verulam SAPS who arrived on the scene, interviewed the suspect, and confirmed that his story lacked credibility.

“The suspect was transported to Verulam SAPS and will face charges of being in possession of suspected stolen property. This incident highlights the importance of proactive patrols in preventing crime and protecting local infrastructure,” Powell added.
