Gardener survives 40m fall down cliff in Umgeni Park

Miraculously the man suffered no traumatic injuries and was treated by paramedics on scene.

A MAN has miraculously survived after falling 40m down a cliff in Umgeni Park on Thursday afternoon (January 23).

It is believed the man was working as a gardener on a property on Wedgewood Crescent when the incident occurred.

While he managed to walk to safety after falling into the property of a popular tourist attraction on Riverside Road, it is unclear how he fell from the height.

IPSS Medical Rescue as well as other first responders arrived on scene and said: “The patient sustained serious head injuries and was treated by IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Life Support.”

Belinda Hellerle Smith, Umgeni Park community co-ordinator and acting chairperson for the Greenwood Park sub-forum 4, confirmed she had received a distress call from the bird park requesting medical assistance.

“I contacted Marshall Security while en-route to the scene, and they assured me that he would dispatch medical assistance. At the time, we were all deeply concerned about the severity of the man’s injuries. However, I later chatted to his employer, who shared the most wonderful news, that he had just returned from the hospital after undergoing thorough X-rays and tests. Miraculously, all results came back clear: no broken bones and no internal injuries. This is truly a miracle,” she said.

Hellerle Smith thanked all those who responded to the incident.
