Durban and Coast SPCA employee to make a splash for animals at Midmar
Mary Koen and her team, the Wet & Woofy Warriors, are aiming to raise funds in the run-up to the iconic Midmar Mile.
WITH just days to go to the 52nd aQuellé Midmar Mile, Mary Koen of the Durban & Coast SPCA is hoping to do everything in her power to raise funds for the organisation.
Koen is part of a team of five people under the name ‘Wet & Woofy Warriors’, who have set their fundraising target at R25 000.
They have already surpassed the R8900 mark.
In total, there are four teams of swimmers who are dedicating their Mile to the SPCA.

“The Midmar Mile has always been on my list to do and I decided this year, with it being my debut, to dedicate my mile to a cause close to my heart,” she said. “I can’t say whether this will be my first and last but I know I will be tired once I’m finished. The main goal is to raise as much as possible for the SPCA. Swimming has always been a part of my background and I’ve been mixing it up with pool and ocean swimming which I think has helped my fitness levels going into Sunday’s main event.”
Koen, who has been with the SPCA for the past 25 years, also gave some insight into her fundraising journey.
“The SPCA is a cause that’s really close to my heart. I’ve always loved animals and knowing that every stroke I make can help rescue, feed, and care for the animals in our care, makes this swim more meaningful. I’ve also adopted my fur babies from the SPCA. So this swim is not just about the challenge of the swim, it’s about making a difference.
“I’m part of an amazing squad and support from my team, sponsors keeps me motivated. If I can help even one animal find a better life, every bit of effort is worth it. I’ve been involved with the SPCA for over 25 years, starting as a tin collector, then working as a marketing income co-ordinator and now as a bequest liaison. I’ve seen first hand the incredible work the SPCA does to protect and care for animals,” she said.
