Sewage issues worsen for north Durban homeowners after storm

Sewage has overflown into properties following the heavy rain last night.

THERE have been no reports of severe flooding in Ward 35 and Ward 36 of Durban North, however councillors for the area say last night’s rains exacerbated existing problems of power failures, burst water pipes, overflowing storm water drains, and sewage flowing onto properties and into pools.

Ward 36 councillor, Heinz de Boer, said no serious incidents had been reported to him.

“There is a burst water main on Waterkant Road, storm water drains overflowing and reports of heaps of sand on the road. There is water standing on Blackburn Road as well. Lovat Road has also partially subsided. Things are okay for now,” he said.

Ward 35 councillor, Bradley Singh, said two residents have contacted him about sewage spills onto their properties following last night’s heavy rain.

“One resident in Virginia has experienced sewage flowing onto her property and even coming up into her kitchen sink. Another resident in La Lucia was scooping out buckets of sewage from inside his home and outside since the early hours of the morning. Both incidents have been going on for a number of weeks up to months and the rain only worsened the already existing situation,” he said.

Singh added that the fault remains unidentified despite the residents’ efforts to solve the problems.
