Break-in at City’s investigations unit

The eThekwini Municipality added it will not provide any further comments on this matter as it is now subject to a police investigation.

POLICE are investigating a break-in at the City Integrity and Investigations Unit’s (CIIU) offices last weekend.

The unit is the office responsible for investigating fraud and corruption-related cases in the City.

According to the City, the motive of the break-in is unknown.

The eThekwini Municipality added it will not provide any further comments on this matter as it is now subject to a police investigation.

City Manager Musa Mbhele has condemned the incident, urging the police to leave no stone unturned to apprehend the culprits.

“What is of great concern is that the CIIU office which is tasked with the huge responsibility of rooting out fraud, corruption and maladministration in the municipality has been targeted by criminals. However, we will not be deterred in our quest to root out fraud and corruption without fear or favour.”

In February, two eThekwini Municipality employees were arrested in two separate incidents of theft while four others have been suspended for theft.

One of the cases was in connection with tar being used at a private residence while the second arrest was made in connection with stealing diesel from a municipal truck.
