Comets book place in Varsity Shield final

Playing in front of a home crowd in Durban North the Comets sealed an emphatic victory to play in their second successive Varsity Shield final.

THE FNB Varsity College Comets continued their winning momentum on Friday last week as they booked their place in the final of the FNB Varsity Shield tournament beating FNB Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) 52-17.

Playing in front of a home crowd in Durban North the Comets scored seven tries and were awarded a penalty try sealing an emphatic victory in the first semi-final of the Varsity Shield tournament.

There has been a lot to celebrate for the team after recently by becoming the first university team from KwaZulu-Natal to be promoted to compete in next year’s FNB Varsity Cup competition.

With just one game left in the campaign, Comets head coach Jeremy McLaren is confident that his side are in the right frame of mind going into the final.

“I’ve said it the whole competition that when we are focused on ourselves then we are in control and make the right decisions. When our focus shifts to the opposition and not on what we can do then we start losing our way a bit,” he said.

Incredibly, the Comets have averaged six tries per match and in the round robin format of the competition, the Comets also beat the FNB CPUT team 40-17.

“We’ve managed to score six tries a game on average and that is with only about 12 or 13 minutes of ball in hand per match. We’ve gained promotion off the back of good defence so our focus is to try and look after the ball a bit more. If we have the ball for longer periods then we can create more pressure,” he said.

In what will be their second consecutive final appearance in the Varsity Shield competition, the Comets now face FNB Madibaz on Friday, April 11 at the IIE’s Varsity College Durban North.
