SADAG launches suicide prevention campaign

The campaign aims to break the silence and stigma around suicide with the belief that a conversation can open the door to hope and support.

THE SA Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has launched its annual suicide prevention campaign.

The message for this year’s campaign is ‘Every Conversation Counts’.

The aim of the campaign is to break that silence and stigma around the topic of suicide and comes as the world gets ready to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Thursday, September 10.

According to SADAG, one in four calls are suicide-related, highlighting just how many people are reaching out because they are struggling.

The World Health Organisation says that more than 700 000 people die due to suicide every year.

“Every Conversation Matters because every person matters,” said Cassey Chambers, operations director at SADAG. “Suicide prevention is something we can all play a part in. You don’t need to have all the answers or be a mental health expert. Sometimes, simply noticing that someone is struggling, asking how they are and listening without judgement can make all the difference. By creating spaces where people feel safe to speak openly, we can help ensure that no one feels they have to face their darkest moments alone.”

Another valuable resource is SADAG’s Suicide Crisis Line (0800 567 567) for people experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional distress.

In Durban, there are two events to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.

  • There will be a 4km Fun Run in support of Suicide Prevention Month on Saturday, September 12, at Westville Athletics Club. Come together for a morning of movement, community and Mental Health awareness while supporting an important cause. Registration is R100 and the run starts at 08:00. Enter online via www.racepass.com.
