Sphamandla Khumalo killed his ex-girlfriend in the vicious attack at a taxi rank near Gateway in August last year.

THE management of the Durban North police station has welcomed the conviction of Sphamandla Khumalo who was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Nomfundo Msibi at a taxi rank near Gateway in August last year.

Msibi, who was Khumalo’s ex-girlfriend, was stabbed multiple times in the vicious attack in uMhlanga and died from her wounds at the scene.

Khumalo, 37 of Nongoma, was handed a life sentence (25 years) at the Durban High Court on March 26.

Spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS, Sergeant Nonhlanhla Shozi, highlighted the good conviction, saying Ngema was now serving time at Westville Prison.

“Warrant Officer Phama strongly opposed bail for the accused during court proceedings. The station commander, detective branch commander and the management at the station commends the detective for her sterling work in this case. This is a tremendous success for the station and we are extremely proud of her,” Shozi said.

Shozi also commended members of the community who prevented Khumalo from leaving the scene of the crime on the day.

“The murder weapon was recovered at the scene and members of the community barricaded Khumalo from leaving the scene who was then arrested by police officers from the station. We also commend the community for their efforts in helping the police arrest the suspect,” she said.
