Tee off in Mount Edgecombe and help save lives

The registry also relies heavily on donations to cover costs associated with donor registration, tissue typing, and its Patient Assistance Programme.

THOUSANDS of patients suffering from leukaemia, blood diseases, and immune disorders rely on one critical lifeline: a bone marrow transplant. But for many, finding a matching donor is a near-impossible task, with odds as slim as one in 100 000.

To improve those odds and support patients in urgent need, the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) is hosting its annual golf day fundraiser on Friday, September 26 at Mount Edgecombe Country Club.

This year’s fundraiser is especially vital, with proceeds earmarked to assist three KZN patients who require stem cell transplants but lack the financial means to proceed.

Founded in 1991, the SABMR is an accredited member of the World Marrow Donor Association and works to match donors with patients in need of life-saving transplants.

“Our aim is to not only raise funds for operational needs but to provide direct support to vulnerable patients. The three patients we are assisting in KZN cannot afford the transplant costs on their own. This golf day is a critical effort to bridge that gap,” said SABMR sustainability co-ordinator Kapil Premchand.

“For thousands of people with leukemia and other blood and immune disorders, their only chance at surviving is a bone marrow transplant,” said Premchand.

“Some patients have a compatible family member but others rely on strangers to save their lives,” he added.

The golf day will follow a fourball format at a cost of R3750 per team, which includes drinks on arrival, lunch, sponsored holes, dinner, an auction, and prize-giving. An online auction featuring sports memorabilia, holiday packages, lifestyle vouchers, and hampers will also go live a week before the event.

“With more donors needed and lives on the line, the SABMR reminds South Africans that they could be someone’s tomorrow,” said Premchand.

Corporate sponsors and golf enthusiasts are encouraged to secure their spots by September 25.

To book, email Premchand at Kapil.Premchand@sabmr.co.za or call 072 794 9316. Alternatively Phumlani Shabalala can be contacted on 067 106 6463 to assist.
