Step up for Gran and Gramps walk in uMhlanga
The event, now in its 10th year, involves a walk along the picturesque uMhlanga Promenade and starts and ends at Durban View Park.
IT has become an annual highlight on the Rotary Club of Umhlanga’s list and come rain or shine, preparations are afoot for this year’s Gran and Gramps 5km Walk.
The event, now in its 10th year, takes place on Thursday, June 5 at 08:30, and involves a walk along the picturesque uMhlanga Promenade that starts and ends at Durban View Park.
However, there is more to just walking; it is also a chance to give back as a share of the proceeds from the entry fees goes towards the Verulam Day and Frail Care Centre. Participants are also encouraged to bring toiletries with them on the day which are donated to the residents of the home.

Vanessa Champion, a past president and convener of the Gran and Gramps Walk, said the event has grown in number over the years.
“With the 2025 edition of the Gran and Gramps walk, we are looking for anyone who’s done the previous nine. The core purpose of the event is to create a social opportunity for retired people and get them active. In recent years we’ve seen the numbers grow and we now cater to 250 walkers on the day. We are also lucky to have 20 sponsored walkers from the Verulam Day and Frail Care Centre who are so excited to participate,” she said.
“Anyone can walk with us on the day, but it’s mainly for grans and gramps. The lovely thing about this annual walk is the charitable angle. We also ask our walkers to bring toiletries with them on the day which are donated to the residents of the home. We are so pleased to have Netcare 911 and various other roleplayers on board with us. Pre-registration is important so we urge participants to contact me,” she said.
