Angry residents resort to mob justice in Blackburn
The community threatened to douse the group of men and set them alight.
THE Blackburn community near Cornubia threatened to douse six men with petrol and set them alight yesterday morning.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived at the scene to find about 100 people gathered around the injured men who they claim were involved in several crimes in the area.
“The four men were apprehended and beaten for information about two other men who were responsible for committing the actual crimes,” said RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram.
“The community managed to apprehend the sought after suspects with the information received. They marched the six men to a soccer ground and bound their hands with rope and electrical cables. They thereafter beat them with sticks and planks. The crowd then threatened to douse them with petrol and torch them,” he added.
RUSA established that one of the suspects was released from Westville Prison a week ago after serving a sentence of seven months for a burglary in Umhlanga.
“A second male was accused of robbing pedestrians of their valuables. The remaining four males were not linked to any crimes. Four of the injured sustained fractures to their arms after they attempted blocking blows being dealt to them during the attack,” added Balram.
The Verulam SAPS are investigating.
