Effingham robbery suspects arrested, goods recovered

Police also recovered a gas firearm, airtime vouchers, and a cash box stolen earlier in the robbery.

TWO suspects linked to the robbery of an Effingham business last Thursday (June 6) have been arrested and some of the goods stolen from the supermarket were recovered.

The incident involved three suspects who entered the store, held employees at gunpoint, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, airtime, and cigarettes.

Law enforcement then viewed CCTV footage which showed the suspects, who had posed as customers, fleeing in a silver Toyota Quest.

“By that same afternoon, Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team, Greenwood Park SAPS Trio Crimes Unit, and Newlands SAPS Trio Crimes Unit were analysing leads which led them to the Newlands area,” explained Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell. “Patrol teams soon located the vehicle parked roadside with one suspect inside. Officers intercepted the car, recovering a gas firearm, airtime vouchers, and a cash box stolen earlier. Both the suspect and the vehicle were transported to Greenwood Park SAPS.”

Through investigations, police then arrested a second suspect at a hideout in Riverdene, Newlands West.

He was arrested and officers seized cartons of stolen cigarettes and a SAPS jacket linked to the robbery.

“All the recovered evidence and detained individuals have been handed over to Greenwood Park SAPS for processing and ongoing investigation,” Powell said.

The third suspect evaded arrest.
