VIDEO: Plans to widen Herrwood Drive
The ward councillor said the City plans on adding an additional lane in both directions on Herrwood Drive.
A PLAN to widen Herrwood Drive and install new traffic circles is on the cards to help alleviate traffic problems in the uMhlanga Ridge area.
According to Ward 35 councillor Bradley Singh, the eThekwini Municipality plans on adding an additional lane in both directions on Herrwood Drive, as well as restructuring two important intersections by adding traffic circles.
There is also a plan to remove an existing traffic circle at the intersection of Centenary Boulevard leading to Gateway and Umhlanga Rocks Drive leading to the village to add a set of traffic lights.
Singh confirmed that both the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) reports have been conducted and passed.

Chairperson of the uMhlanga Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (URRA) Terri MacLarty said the plan could possibly stop drag racing and reckless driving on the road.
“Residents in the area had long raised issues of speeding and drag racing on Herrwood Drive. Initially we had asked the City to reclassify the road, as they see it as a thoroughfare, and install traffic calming measures. However they said this was not possible. As the ratepayers’ association the decision to widen while adding traffic circles at two key intersections, we feel would help curb speeding and racing on the road. As I understand it the widening of Herrwood Drive is not the entire length of the road,” she said.
“While we are happy with the City’s explanation on the proposed plan, we do have concerns about two other intersections further along the road which we feel might be best suited for traffic calming measures. We would also ask the City to consider adding taxi lay-bys which could stop the traffic bottle-necking and reduce the danger of taxis stopping in the middle of the road,” she said.
