Elite challenge crowns champs at Riverside sports

The challenge brought together the country’s top eight men’s and women’s non-tertiary clubs in a battle for bragging rights.

THE best hockey clubs from around the country converged on the Riverside Sports facility for last weekend’s Rhino-Turf Elite Club Challenge which saw Central win the men’s final for a third year in a row and the Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC) win the women’s final.

The challenge brought together the country’s top eight men’s and women’s non-tertiary clubs in a battle for bragging rights.

For the Riverside Hockey Club, the men’s team claimed bronze with a tidy 3-1 win over Old Eds Hockey club while the women’s team lost the final 4-1 to WPCC.

Riverside Hockey Club chairman Brendon Boyall congratulated the winners of both the men’s and women’s competitions while also praising the performances of Riverside.

“The quality of hockey was exceptional and every game was competitive, showcasing the best of the best. That is what makes the Rhino-Turf Elite Club Challenge one of a kind. I would like to congratulate Central who won their third successive title, a feat not accomplished before, and the women’s WPCC team. Alongside the main competition we had the qualifiers which brought its own element of action and surprise.

“For our Riverside teams there was a great feeling of pride and slight disappointment as we played exceptionally well. We are already gearing up for next year’s competition which we feel will keep raising the bar for club hockey,” he said.
