Durban North plant and orchid lovers to gather at blooming fair

The organisers behind the fair, said the event will include displays, plant sales, talks and potting demonstrations.

BLOOMING orchids and rare plants will be the order of the day at this month’s Fairway Orchid and Rare Plant Fair on Saturday, August 30, at the Fairway Guest House.

Nico Glintenkamp, the chairperson of the Natal Orchid Society, the organisers behind the fair, said the event will include displays, plant sales, talks and potting demonstrations.

Glintenkamp, who is also a director of the SA Orchid Council, said the event is also a way to raise awareness on orchids.

“This fair is about raising awareness on orchids but also how to grow orchids. Most people start off with the supermarket-purchased Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchids, and it is only once they join a garden club or our society they realise there’s so much more. Orchids are one of the largest plant groups on the planet with a diverse variety.

“It is for that reason that novices can come to the show and learn from experienced orchid lovers who will provide the advice and guidance you need. For people who’ve never been to one of our fairs there will be a whole array of orchids, as well as rare and tropical plants, including bromeliads. The Natal Orchid Society will also put on a display and there will be two potting demonstrations,” he said.

There will also be a number of vendors selling plants on the day, including Plantae, Mighty Fine Orchids and God’s Green Gifts.

Glintenkamp said that orchid keeping has taught him patience over the years and he encouraged residents to visit the fair.

“We have a wonderful venue at the Fairway Guest House and there is a long history with the venue. There is ample parking and once people have seen everything on display they can have lunch at the restaurant at the guest house,” he said.
