Remedial work at Moses Mabhida to continue until 2027
The scope of work includes the restoration of steel, concrete, and roof components, with a focus on repairing mechanical joints, treating steel corrosion, and reinforcing the arch structure.

THE eThekwini Municipality has confirmed the extension of the contract to continue remedial work at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The news was confirmed at the City’s Executive Committee (EXCO) meeting on Tuesday.
So far the rehabilitation work has been carried out on the stadium’s concrete and roof structure, which the City said is aimed at preserving its status as a ‘world-class sporting facility’.
“The scope of work includes the restoration of steel, concrete, and roof components, with a focus on repairing mechanical joints, treating steel corrosion, and reinforcing the arch structure. During the initial phase, several critical maintenance issues were successfully addressed, including the replacement of the damaged roof membrane, the application of corrosion-resistant coatings to exposed steel surfaces, the replacement of arch cladding, the removal of corroded sky car infrastructure, and upgrades to drainage systems to facilitate ongoing maintenance,” the City said in a statement.

The existing contract is set to expire on September 28, and it is anticipated that some essential work will remain incomplete by that date.
The City added that the remaining rehabilitation work will be completed in the next two financial years.
“The extension aims to ensure the continued progress of critical repairs necessary to maintain the structural integrity and safety of the facility. The 15-year-old facility, which was built ahead of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, requires a constant maintenance plan. This plan ensures that the structure is safe for residents and visitors, is operational, and is aligned with evolving technological needs for efficient and profitable commercial operations,” the City said.
The proposed three-year budget for the repairs amounts to R284.7m.
