Mount Edgecombe paddler puts in star performance at world champs

Jenna Nisbet, a Grade Five educator at Virginia Preparatory School, competed at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships.

MOUNT Edgecombe resident Jenna Nisbet was among the standout local performers at the recent ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Gyor, Hungary.

The 32-year-old was part of Team South Africa which ended the champs with four medals overall.

Nisbet, a Grade Five educator at Virginia Preparatory School, competed in the K1 short course (3.6km) event and the K2 long course (26km) event with paddling partner Jade Wilson.

She finished 16th overall in the K1 race and fourth in the K2 race, just 20 seconds off the leaders.

“I raced at this venue 10 years ago when I won a bronze medal so it was really special going back to the same place and racing on the same course. Having competed internationally for South Africa I feel I was able to call on my experience and knowledge for both my races, and while I didn’t win a medal I was proud of my performances.

“Prior to Hungary, my goal was to make the team as I didn’t make the team last year. The short course is not necessarily my strength but I felt it was a good opportunity to get the race nerves out of the way at the event and settle into the champs. To make the final in that event was fantastic. The long course is more my discipline and I was very thankful and happy with how Jade and I paddled the race,” she said.

Another local paddler who performed well at the event was Saskia Hockly, who finished fifth in the U23 women’s race and fifth in the senior women’s long course event with partner Pippa McGregor.
