Geek convention the ultimate draw for cosplay, family and fandom

ICON Durban made a welcome return after a six-year hiatus.

AMAZING cosplays, family fun and tabletop gaming were the order of the day over the weekend as KZN’s premier geek culture convention, ICON Durban, made a welcome return after a six-year hiatus.

The event took place at Westville Girls’ High School and it was the attendees who stole the show with some meta references, crossovers and popular culture-inspired clothing.

Incredibly it was the 10th anniversary of the first ICON Durban.

Cleo Fitzgerald, one of the organisers, also shared her excitement about the convention.

“It has been an amazing weekend. This community has always stepped up when we needed. What was so refreshing and awesome to see were the many new faces and demographics that have come through. We had hundreds of visitors over the two days and I definitely feel the word has gone out. It was also great to see so many families come through and it’s so exciting seeing everyone’s cosplays. People love the chance to dress up and we’ve seen some amazing cosplays at the convention,” she said.
