WATCH: Northwood win national marimba competition
The band had to play four different pieces, each in a separate category.
NORTHWOOD School’s marimba band were recently crowned SA Schools Marimba Champs at Michaelhouse.
The band had to play four different pieces, each in a separate category. From a Beethoven remix to Gloria Estefan’s Conga, the band had to excel across all four categories to make the final playoffs.
In the final round, they performed their two strongest pieces again, a Michael Jackson medley and Vuka. Those performances clinched the title for them.
Gareth Gale, the director of music at the school, was proud of the band.
“Honestly, it’s difficult to put into words just how proud I am of them! This team spent countless hours in the rehearsal room, refining their parts, mastering details and nuances, and ensuring each piece was performed with passion, creativity, energy, charisma, and flair. Early mornings, late evenings, they were unwavering in their commitment and poured themselves wholeheartedly into their preparation.
“To be crowned national champions is a title that, honestly, a year and a half ago, we only dreamed of. To share the stage with bands that are so highly respected and to ultimately win the title is an incredible achievement. I’ve always said there is a tangible “Northwood magic” that shines through in our boys, and it was so evident this week. At the heart of it all is their joy in performing together – they love being on stage and creating an experience for the audience that will never be forgotten,” he said.
