City replaces streetlight poles along M4 Highway

eThekwini Municipality replaces 60 streetlight poles and installs new LED lights along the M4 near Blue Lagoon.

AROUND 60 streetlight poles have been replaced on the M4 Ruth First Highway near Blue Lagoon.

This was announced on Monday by the eThekwini Municipality which said the work was carried out by the Energy Management Directorate.

Teams also installed brand new 250-watt LED lights on the replaced poles.

“Over time, several streetlight poles in the vicinity had shown signs of wear and corrosion, posing both safety and reliability concerns. The Directorate’s dedicated teams removed the aged poles and installed brand new replacements and also fitted each pole with 250-watt LED lights,” the City said in a statement.

“These modern fixtures are not only brighter and more energy-efficient, but also require less maintenance, contributing to a more sustainable and safer urban environment. The Municipality has identified several streetlights across the City with deteriorating supporting infrastructure.”

While the streetlight replacement programme is ongoing, there have been calls from residents to address non-functioning streetlights on Riverside Road in particular and roads in Durban North.
