Crawford International La Lucia maths star makes history

Visually impaired learner Jivana Bisetty made history as the first blind pupil to place in the Top 10 nationally in the SA Mathematics Challenge.

CRAWFORD International La Lucia Preparatory learner Jivana Bisetty has made history in the world of mathematics and captured hearts along the way.

Despite being visually impaired, the determined Grade Four learner achieved remarkable success in several mathematics competitions this year, including becoming the first blind student to place in the Top 10 nationally in the South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC).

“I love mathematics because it challenges me to think differently,” said Jivana.

“My love for mathematics has inspired me to try harder examples and make mistakes along the way. I continue to learn by making mistakes. I attempt each question in a very logical manner; breaking down the question, simplifying it, and sometimes even working backwards to find the answer.”

Earlier this year, Jivana participated in the National Abagility Abacus Tournament in Rustenburg, where she earned a silver medal in Level 10 Kyu, despite feeling underprepared. She then advanced through the SAMC and the Beyond Maths Competition, balancing her studies with her music practise and friendships.

“Term 3 was a very demanding time for me. I remember feeling so anxious before my final paper that I could not even eat. But I was determined to complete the paper, no matter how difficult it was.”

Her hard work paid off and she was crowned Top Grade Four pupil in the Beyond Maths Competition, placing eighth in KZN in the Level 1 category, and securing her historic Top 10 national position in the Junior Division of the SAMC, celebrated at a special ceremony in Johannesburg.

“I want to inspire others through my journey in mathematics. Remember, if you are passionate about something, then you are already a winner,” said Jivana.
