An evening of Afrofuturism (Friday, November 28)

INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed cellist, vocalist, and cultural pioneer, Dr. Thokozani Mhlambi, will present a one-of-a-kind concert, playing music by John Knox Bokwe, at the KZNSA Gallery on Friday, November 28 at 18:00.

Entitled, Thokozani Mhlambi: Playing John Knox Bokwe Today, Mhlambi will be joined by special guest, award-winning storyteller Dr Gcina Mhlophe.

The show coincides with the release of Mhlambi’s new single, Plea for Africa, a heritage piece originally composed by John Knox Bokwe.

Tickets are available through Webtickets and the show will be held at the KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, Berea.

Get into festive spirit (Friday, November 28)

The organisers of this year’s St Margaret’s Church night market are hoping Durbanites show up in their numbers to support local.

The market offers an array of vendors and is perfect for those doing Christmas shopping.

“Our annual Christmas market shows others this sense of community and we want to share this with our neighbours. This market is also a fundraiser for the church. We have a great selection of vendors and budding entrepreneurs who will showcase their wares. We are looking forward to a fun evening full of Christmas spirit,” explained church warden Leanne Fenwick

The market will be held at the church premises on 11 Delaware Avenue on November 28 from 17:00 until 20:00.

Fikile Khuzwayo will be providing the best coffee at St Margaret’s Christmas night market.

Celebrate all things Scottish (Saturday, November 29)

THE Durban Caledonian Pipe Band and Friends are looking forward to the 13th annual production of Carols and Kilts at Shongweni Farmers Market on Saturday, November 29 at 15:00 and at the DLI Hall in Greyville on Sunday, November 30 at 14:00.

The much-loved events kick off the festive season celebrations with a blend of highland music and a medley of well-known Christmas carols and seasonal music numbers.

The Durban Caledonian Pipe Band will be supported by musicians on electric, acoustic and bass guitar, keyboard, saxophone, drum-kit, and the noble cowbell, and guest vocalists. Among the special guests will be Garth Strydom (electric guitar), Nick Mowbray (keyboard) and Cassie Rae (vocals).

They will be joined by dancers performing with the band, twin sisters Samantha Wood and Melissa Alberts from Celtic Heartbeat.

The concert can be enjoyed at Shongweni Farmer’s Market on Saturday afternoon.

There is a Sunday matinee at DLI Hall, in the middle of the Greyville Racecourse in Durban. Round tables will be set up in the hall and food will be on sale.

Christmas in Concert (Sunday, November 30)

THE Durban Symphonic Choir featuring AJ Bethke on organ presents Christmas in Concert Durban at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Mariannhill on Sunday, November 30 at 15:00.

The programme includes beloved classics, such as The Holy City, Joy to the World, and Hark the Herald Angels, as well as exciting new works that will truly bring everyone into the Christmas spirit.

The Durban Symphonic Choir is one of the oldest amateur choirs in South Africa. It was formed in 1966 by Heather Brandon at the request of the Durban City Council and has become a self-funding amateur choir whose diverse membership shares a love of music.

Tickets cost R130 for adults and children U12 are free.

Drakensberg choir to perform at Reddam (Sunday, November 30)

REDDAM House Umhlanga shares a special relationship with the Drakensberg Boys Choir School, having collaborated with the school to great acclaim on numerous occasions in recent years.

In keeping with traditions the world-famous choir returns as part of their nationwide festive Noël Tour.

Russell Scott, the campus director of culture at Reddam, said the performance will put audiences in the perfect mood for the festive season.

“It will be an evening of uplifting musical joy. The Reddam House Umhlanga College Choir will open the first and second halves, before the ‘Drakies’ take to the stage,” he said.

The show takes place on Sunday, November 30, at the school’s Robert and Robin Muir Auditorium (21A Preston Drive, Prestondale).

Seating is supper theatre, barnyard style and tickets are R150 and are available via www.quicket.co.za.

The concert begins at 18:00 and doors open at 17:20.

Earlier this year Reddam House Umhlanga performed at the Drakensberg Boys Choir’s Music in the Mountains Festival and this weekend they will perform alongside the choir at their school. The concert takes place on Sunday, November 30.

Beethoven concert hits the right note (Sunday, November 30)

DURBAN concert pianist Andrew Warburton presents a concert series entitled Mostly Beethoven at the Howard College Theatre on the UKZN Howard College campus on Sunday, November 30. The concert will include solo piano recitals, and violin and piano recitals.

The show starts at 11:00 and features Warburton on piano and Evgeny Zhadanov on violin.

The programme includes Beethoven’s Kreutzer sonata, Op.47; Brahms’ violin sonata no. 1 and Janacek’s sonata for violin and piano, written in 1914 during the First World War.

Talented piano students will feature as prelude performers.

Tickets are R120, and R100 for pensioners and children. Contact Andrew on 082 853 4540 for bookings and inquiries. Tickets are available at the door.
