Gang linked to robberies in Durban North arrested

According to private security the gang have been linked to several common robbery cases reported across the province.

FOUR suspects linked to robberies in Richards Bay, Umhlali, Verulam, KwaDukuza, Pinetown and Durban North were arrested last week after an intelligence-led operation between Richards Bay SAPS and Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team.

The suspects’ modus operandi involved deliberately bumping into victims, distracting them, and stealing their cellphones before fleeing.

One of the incidents occurred at a Richards Bay petrol station last Wednesday (January 21) and the suspects were captured on CCTV footage.

“It was while reviewing footage that our members identified the suspects as a group already known for committing similar robberies across multiple areas in KZN,” said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

“Further information confirmed that the same group had moved on to a fast-food restaurant in Richards Bay, where additional cellphones were stolen from patrons before the suspects fled. The suspects were spotted on the N2. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects fled heading south before exiting toward uMdloti. A co-ordinated pursuit followed, and members successfully brought the vehicle to a halt.”

Police recovered multiple cellphones, two of which were positively linked to the robbery at a Richards Bay restaurant.
