Colour opens a bigger world for Durban North foundation
One of the resources the team provides is a set of laminated posters that cover the alphabet, colours, shapes, and numbers. As new centres join the programme, Domino is seeking sponsorship to produce an additional 30 sets of these posters.
THE Domino Foundation is partnering with early childhood development (ECD) centres to strengthen early learning and help preschoolers build the skills they need before starting school.
A key part of early childhood development is learning to recognise colours and shapes. Newborns initially see the world in black and white, gradually developing the ability to distinguish between different hues.
According to Thembelihle Mkhwanazi, leader of Domino’s ECD team, this stage of learning plays an important role in a child’s development.

“Colour recognition is a critical step in a toddler’s cognitive development,” she said.
“It helps with language skills, communication and understanding. When children also learn about shapes, they begin to organise the world around them, which makes learning the alphabet and numbers much easier.”
Domino’s ECD team is currently partnering with 32 centres, many of which are under-resourced and need additional support to effectively stimulate young learners.
The programme works alongside educators, providing training and educational materials to help ensure children leave the centres ready for formal schooling.
