Police officer killed, one injured in Mount Edgecombe shooting

The vehicle the officers were travelling in was riddled with bullets, and the motive for the shooting is unknown.

TWO crime intelligence police officers have been ambushed by a group of heavily armed suspects in a shooting incident on Flanders Drive in the Mount Edgecombe area on Thursday afternoon (April 30).

According to initial reports, one of the officers was killed in the incident while the other was shot and injured.

The injured officer has been airlifted to a nearby hospital as investigations continue into the motive for the shooting.

According to a statement by Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) multiple calls were received from the public reporting gunfire in the area.

“On arrival, officers established that two occupants of a white Toyota Hilux bakkie had come under attack from individuals travelling in a white Toyota Quantum. The bakkie was extensively damaged after being riddled with bullets. A significant number of spent cartridges were recovered on scene, indicating the use of high calibre firearms,” the statement read.

The driver of the vehicle sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on scene while the passenger was airlifted to hospital.
