SAPS mourns slain officer killed in Mount Edgecombe ambush
Crime intelligence officer Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo was laid to rest in Inanda on Saturday, nearly a month after he was critically wounded in an ambush in Mount Edgecombe that claimed the life of his colleague.
CRIME intelligence officer Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo was laid to rest at his home in the Amatikwe area of Inanda on Saturday (May 30), as senior SAPS officials renewed their commitment to bringing his killers to justice.
Crime Intelligence’s Major General Nosipho Madondo and KZN Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Support Services, Major General Dr Siyanda Ngcobo, led a SAPS delegation at Khuzwayo’s official funeral at Dr JL Dube High School in D Section, KwaMashu.
Khuzwayo and his colleague, Captain Cornelius Nel, were ambushed by unknown suspects in Mount Edgecombe. The attackers opened fire on the officers with high-calibre firearms, unleashing a hail of bullets on their vehicle.

The 39-year-old Khuzwayo sustained gunshot wounds and was airlifted to hospital, where he fought for his life for almost a month before succumbing to his injuries. Nel died at the scene.
Addressing mourners, Madondo said Khuzwayo’s death was a significant loss in the fight against organised crime.
“We have a mandate to fight organised crime and we needed Sergeant Khuzwayo to carry out the mandate with us. It is a concern that he died at the hands of organised crime which he was fighting against. Investigations are at an advanced stage and we shall know no rest before the killers are brought to justice,” she said.
Police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the attack. Investigations are continuing.
