Ward 34 councillor joins ActionSA

Andrew Akkers will now stand as the party’s candidate for Ward 34 in the Local Government Elections in November.

ANDREW Akkers has joined political party ActionSA as a ward candidate for the Local Government Elections on November 4.

Akkers was voted in as an Independent Candidate in 2024 where he won 43% of the vote.

He is the councillor for Ward 34 which includes Kenville, Sea Cow Lake, Greenwood Park, Avoca and Effingham.

According to a statement from the party, Akkers officially joined the party on Saturday (July 4).

This means Akkers will stand as a candidate for Ward 34 in the November elections under the party’s banner.

It is unclear whether this decision would trigger a by-election and Northglen News is awaiting a response from the Electoral Commission.

“I’m still the Independent Ward 34 councillor until the LGE on November 4. While my political affiliation has changed, my commitment to the residents of Ward 34 has not. I entered public service because this community asked me to serve, and that remains my priority. My loyalty has always been to the people of Ward 34 before any political party,” explained Akkers.

“Serving as an independent councillor has shown me that one person can make a meaningful difference through hard work and dedication. However, it has also highlighted the practical limitations of working alone. Joining ActionSA provides me with a stronger platform to advocate for our community, greater influence within council, and the support of a team that shares my commitment to ethical leadership, accountability, and service delivery,” he said.
