AFTER almost two years Kew Road in Kenville is set to be reopened once repairs are completed this week.

In 2021 a section of the residential road collapsed and fault line cracks appeared along the middle of the road.

Then in 2022 the section where the collapse had occurred was repaired and reinstated, however residents cited safety concerns about the reinforcement of the bank.

In 2024 the same section of road again collapsed, as well as the boundary wall of a business property running parallel to the road.

The chairperson of the Kenville and Sea Cow Lake Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association, Anil Beekrum, welcomed the repairs.

“As a ratepayers’ body we’ve been putting pressure on the eThekwini Municipality to get this road reopened and reinstated. There was talk of rehauling the entirety of the road, however costs would not allow for that kind of work.

“The downside to this closure has been the money spent on fuel for residents trying to access the area. They often have to drive the long way around to get home. I’ve also heard once the road is reopened, only light motor vehicles will access it,” he said.

Beekrum said he has raised the possibility of installing weight-limit signs for heavy-duty vehicles.

“Some of these roads in the Kenville and Sea Cow Lake areas are not built for heavy-duty vehicles,” he said.
