GIVING back should never be limited to a date on the calendar. Real change happens when people choose to serve their communities consistently, using their time, skills and compassion to improve the lives of others.

That is the message from The Domino Foundation’s Connector, Thembeka Gumede, who spends the year encouraging and co-ordinating volunteers to support the organisation’s approximately 12 000 beneficiaries.

“I do what I do because I am passionate about encouraging people to become part of the solution to the challenges so many are facing. It’s not only about The Domino Foundation. There are countless NPOs and community organisations doing important work, and they all need people who are willing to get involved,” she said.

Throughout the year, Gumede works with individuals, businesses, schools and community groups who are prepared to give their time and talents where they are needed most. She believes lasting impact comes through ongoing commitment rather than one-off acts of service.

Quoting the late Nelson Mandela, she said: “We can all do more to reach out, take care, and serve the well-being of others. No difficulty, problem or breakdown need stop you from choosing and living a life of service.”

Gumede thanked every individual and organisation that has volunteered with The Domino Foundation over the past two years, saying their support has made a meaningful difference. She encouraged more South Africans to find a place where they can serve wholeheartedly and make volunteering a regular part of their lives.

“Everyone has something valuable to offer. Find an opportunity where your skills, experience or time can make a difference, and stay committed. That’s how we build stronger communities.”
