R2.6m committed to upgrade of Glenashley Library
The funding for the upgrade was secured by the Community Infrastructure Projects which funds projects on ward councillor submissions.
IN July, the Friends of Glenashley Library (FOL) embarked on a fundraising campaign to restore and uplift the Glenashley Library (The Brian Page Library).
At the time Diane Whittaker, a member of the friends of the library association, explained they had a wish list of projects they hope to achieve at the library on Lindsay Drive.
Now there is good news as Ward 35 councillor Bradley Singh has committed R2.6m to the restoration project.
The funding for the project was secured by the Community Infrastructure Projects which funds repairs and construction based on ward councillor submissions.

According to Singh, the fence around the library will be replaced with clearview fencing costing a little over R1m. The outside of the library will be repainted, and there will be a complete revamp inside the library. Part of the restoration included the upgrading of the staff kitchen, installing non-slip tiling, and repairing, sealing and varnishing timber windows.
Wilma Tweedle, who lives in Glenashley also welcomed the project, saying it would benefit the community.
“I live in Glenashley and my son used to use the library when he was young. It holds a special place in the community’s hearts. It’s a long-established and much-loved library. We are losing libraries across eThekwini so this project comes at the best time as we feel it’s important to promote literacy and preserve knowledge centres like the Glenashley Library.
“As the structure of the library has aged we’ve seen the decay of structures in and around the library, including water damage because the seals around the windows have been damaged. Much of the funds secured will go towards some of the projects councillor Singh mentioned but there are also other commitments that have been secured in the initial stages of the revamp by the FOL which will go ahead,” she said.
