THE Durban North police station says it continues to record cases of online fraud.

At the monthly community imbizos, Captain Tracey Mey from the Crime Information Management and Analysis Centre (CIMAC), has highlighted the prevalence of theses types of scams, including vishing and payment scams.

Vishing refers to fraudsters using phone calls that trick victims into providing personal information, like passwords or bank details.

“Cases involving online fraud are an ongoing crime at the station especially now with some criminal networks posing as legitimate businesses. Our message to residents is to verify all invoices and online advertisements with the business before making any payment.

“We have also recorded several instances of scams where individuals pretend to be officials from the bank and alleging there is fraudulent activity on your account in order to get your password and private details. We also encourage people not to click on unverified links,” Mey said.

Another scam doing the rounds is the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act (AARTO) scam.

Durban Metro Police Service also recently warned about the scam on their Facebook page.

“Motorists are advised to verify their AARTO traffic infringements through official channels. Do not click on unverified links received via SMS, WhatsApp or email, as these may be fraudulent. Remain vigilant and protect your personal and banking information,” the post read.
