VIRGINIA Preparatory School Grade Five learner Anastazia Naidoo recently participated in the SA Kids Golf Junior Africa Challenge at San Lameer Golf Resort.

Competing against 194 participants, Anastazia achieved a third place overall finish in the U11 girls’ category.

The 11-year-old started playing golf in 2023 and was introduced to the sport by her parents.

“Both my parents play golf and I would always go to the course and watch them play. My dad mainly got me into it and he would take me down to the driving range about three years ago. At first I didn’t like golf to be honest, I really wanted to play netball, but as time went on I started to enjoy the game more,” she said.

Speaking on her achievements at the Junior Africa Challenge, Anastazia said she had mixed feelings.

“I did feel a bit disappointed in myself because I lost second place by one shot. I’m still proud of third place and my goal now is to improve on that at next year’s competition. I move up an age group next year,” she said.

She practises every Thursday with her coach and often goes to the driving range with her father. Her two favourite golf courses are Umhlali and Zimbali.

Her goal is to pursue golf as a career and one day play on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour.
