Project to repair collapsed stormwater pipe in Glenashley

The collapsed pipe has led to a large puddle of water pooling next to a stormwater drain at the corner of Ashley Avenue and Minerva Avenue.

A GLENASHLEY resident has bemoaned the fact that the municipality has taken three years to attend to and fix a broken stormwater pipe outside his property.

The collapsed pipe has led to a large puddle of water pooling next to a stormwater drain at the corner of Ashley Avenue and Minerva Avenue.

Ram Singh, whose property has been affected with water eroding the edge of his driveway, said he cannot understand why it is taking so long to fix.

“I first reported the issue on December 23, 2023. How has it taken three years and it’s still not fixed. It is unacceptable,” the 81-year-old said. “There is also a foul odour coming from the water and we can’t leave the windows open or sit on our balcony. Engineers have come out, used high-tech equipment to diagnose the problem and even did a pressure test.

“I’m not sure if budget constraints meant there were no funds available but three financial windows is a long time to wait. Not only has it damaged my driveway but it’s also impacted the pavement,” he said.

Singh added he also felt sorry for pedestrians who ran the risk of being soaked if a vehicle drove past.

Ward 35 councillor Bradley Singh said funds had now been secured to repair the collapsed pipe.

“Contractors were meant to begin work on Monday (October 5) and the repairs and reinstatement are set to take a month to complete. They will have to dig up near the manhole and fix the collapsed pipe so there may be a little inconvenience for a short while for traffic in the area. I’ve fielded various complaints from residents in the area. I agree with Mr Singh the stagnant water does pose a risk for pedestrians using the pavement and for residents living in close proximity,” he said.
