Crime knows no race

We have a misconception that it is only a certain group of South Africans who are committing crimes, but the harsh reality is that all ethnic groups are now resorting to crime to support themselves, some more than others.

I do not condone crime and the violence used to perpetrate it, however, it is inevitable in a country with high unemployment and corruption.

I like to urge all residents to be aware of suspicious people loitering around the community, regardless of their colour. Many people who pose as beggars or salesmen, are actually just scouting the area and trying to get a look at the layout of your home.

We can help to eradicate crime if we inform the police and security companies of suspicious people and vehicles in the area. Let us stop complaining about crime and actually be part of the solution to combating it.

Let us also make more of an effort to get to know our neighbours and people in our neighbourhood as they are the closest people who will be able to help in the event of an emergency. Remember: No man is an island!

United we stand strong, but divided we will fall hard!
