SA might be a political joke

Reader says that if Apartheid is considered a crime against humanity, then those who benefitted from it must pay back 'something'.

THE letter by Dean Macpherson bears reference. For once I agree with the DA.  All the tax money of the people which was wasted on non-security upgrades on President Zuma’s Nkandla residence must be paid back. Much more can be said. If the money is not paid back, SA may as well be written off as just another failed and corrupt African State.

That would be contrary to what Nelson Mandela and other struggle stalwarts stood for. We are supposed to have an open and transparent government according to our Constitution.

In fact, ideally we must have what Abraham Lincoln described as a ‘government of the people, for the people and by the people’. Having said that, maybe the time has come for those who benefited from Apartheid to pay back what they made during that bleak period of SA history.

If it is accepted and it has that Apartheid was a crime against humanity, then in the interests of reconciliation then something must be paid back otherwise it is a question of the pot calling the kettle black.
If that is not done than we are a political joke.
