The ‘fallacy’ of free range eggs

Reader cautions shoppers to be wary of what is sometimes labelled, 'free range' eggs.

Editor

Please don’t believe that free range eggs are produced by hens running around in grass covered fields but are confined in yards covered with straw and dust contaminated with their own faeces. Egg contamination is caused when the egg is laid, in nest boxes or on the ground. As the egg cools it can absorb possible contamination.

To quote a vet, “I would choose and egg produced in the cleanest environment, hardly touched by hand in production, not a free range egg where eggs lie on the ground or in nest boxes and are often contaminated by dropping containing bacteria.”
