Nine-year-old Gingindlovu Primary School pupil Keolan Moonsamy is a 100 percenter.
Having achieved 100 percent for mathematics and spellathon, the Grade 4 pupil was selected to present a speech in front of the school assembly in addition to being selected for a quiz and potery recital.

His hobbies include reading and doing puzzles as well as working on maths sums.
He also has a bunch of certificates for all of his achievements and hopes to keep going on and up as he grows.

Drawing and painting are the passions of Grade 7 Umhlali Preparatory School pupil Sophia Grobler.

The 12 year old can spend hours creating artist masterpieces despite her shy demeanor.
According to her mother Kim, Sophia is very arty and she is absolutely passionate about drawing and painting.

“She recently designed a book cover for her English novel as an assignment. She got 9 1/2 out of 10. She should have gotten 10/10 but the class teacher told her that no one can ever get full marks for creativity on the Rubric scale.

“She obtained the highest mark in her class and as a shy child was so gobsmacked when the boys and girls in her class cheered her on and clapped. She said the “boys” had never noticed her before until the drawing was passed around in class. She achieved an accolade even though she did not get 10/10.”Kim said she came home extremely proud and with so much enthusiasm.

“My 19 year old son wants to have the picture laminated and keep it on his wall. Her talent in the arts is phenomenal and we don’t have money to send her to private art classes. She loves Manga art especially and loves the Japanese language. She loves to read Manga books when we can afford them. So proud of her abilities.”

Kamaya Moodliar is nothing short of a golfing superstar.

The Form 4 (Grade 11) Ashton International College Ballito pupil has been reaching golfing milestones since a young age, receiving accolades since primary school.

Most recently, Kamaya participated in the KZN Champs recently, which were held at Kloof Country Club, where she came ninth overall in the championship and won the Challenge Shield and the runner up for Gold division nett. She also came fourth in the closed division for KZN.

She also participated in the GolfRSA Nomads Junior Rose Bowl at Lost City, Sun City in March.The Nomads SA Girls Rose Bowl Championship is a great platform to enable international competition. Kamaya finished in the top 20 in this tournament which is a huge achievement.

Also in March Kamaya played in the Western Province Champs where she achieved 16th position and then from April 1 an s2 she played in the Simbithi Club Champs where she achieved second position.

Sporting enthusiast Tristan Reece Chetty has a growing love for cricket which began in his primary school years.

Now at age 16, the Grade 11 Stanger Manor Swcondary School pupil, he has represented Ilembe District cricket team for five consecutive years.He received the cricket award for the year when he was in Grade 7 at Darnall Primary School and participated in the cricket league playing for Manor Cricket Club.

“I started playing cricket since primary school. I enjoyed playing sport but cricket to me stood out. At Darnall Primary School I found my passion and I realised my talent as a spin bowler and batsman and never looked back since then.

“My parents are my greatest support structure who I look up to. They make sure that they are there to watch me play at all my games and have made many sacrifices so that I can have everything I need to continue improving my skills in cricket,” he said.
His future goal is to obtain his KZN colours.

“I’m striving very hard and working daily on preparing to reach this goal. One day in the future I would also like to play for a nationally recognised team of South Africa. I know with hard work and sacrifice anything is possible so yes the stars are the limit and I am going to keep reaching out for them.”

A 13-year-old with a dream – that is Ayanda Hlelo Gumede, a Grade 7 pupil at Stanger Heights Primary School.

Ayanda dreams of influencing and inspiring underprivileged girls to rise up and become more than they are made to believe they can be.

In her quest for leadership, Ayanda was able to bag the title of head prefect at Stanger Heights Primary School. Ayanda has a beautiful voice and she participates in school choir competitions which earned her and her peers first place in a district competition in 2022 in the iLembe District.

Ayanda’s determination to succeed has led her to excel in all her subjects. She triumphs in speech and poetry contests. This young motivational leader is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Her knowledge of mathematics allows her to help other pupils who are struggling in this area. Ayanda’s grandmother is her inspiration. Ayanda believes that through hard work, dedication, setting goals for yourself and helping others will lead you into having a brilliant future.

AT just six years old, Grade 1 North Coast Primary School pupil Brayden Naidoo is already on the search for his niche.

The young lad is an avid problem solver and lover of puzzles of all kinds. He loves it so much that he began tackling adult level puzzles at the age of four with great success.
He is also delving into the world of STEM with a keen interesting in making his own toys come alive.

Brayden is also testing the waters with swimming and soccer to find out where his talents lie and also plays sport at school including hockey and cricket.
Also on his radar is volleyball, a passion of his father. If anything Brayden is a firecracker to look out for in the upcoming months.

Cricket runs through 13-year-old Kadyn Dewlall’s blood. The Grade 8 pupil was recognised for his sporting prowess during his primary school career at KwaDukuza Primary School and was awarded a cricket scholarship to Glenwood High School.

Coming from humble beginnings at Indian Village, Kadyn has been playing cricket since he was old enough to hold a bat. Some of his many achievements include being selected as sports boy in his Grade 7 year, being scouted as one of five from the district for cricket and playing for the iLembe hub in the under 10, 11, 12 and 13 categories as well as the regional team.

Coming from a sporting background Kadyn also excels in other sport such as volleyball, soccer and athletics and his older brother who also excels at cricket is his inspiration.
His hopes for the future include being selected for the cricket academy and play provincially and even nationally one day.

Nakisha Naidoo, a 14-year-old Grade 9 pupil at Stanger Manor Secondary School is building a strong foundation to become a paediatrician one day.

Nakisha is a straight A student since Grade 1 who dabbles in spellathons and Conquestas.
She has received awards for reading and was placed in the top 10 of the interschool Math a Move competition in 2019.

Nakisha says her goal since starting school in Grade R was to always achieve her best.

“I always stayed in class completing my homework and reading which is my passion while other kids went out. I’m very ambitious, not only in my studies but in my personal life as well. I have a clear view of what I want in life. I set out short and long term goals and try my best to achieve them. I think of hard work and dedication but also being a humble individual that knows how to interact with people and ask for help when needed.”

She said through her hard work and dedication she has achieved many awards.
“My future goal is to become a successful women and provide the best for my mum and dad as they have always supported and helped me. I believe hard work always pays off, so I will try my best to make my parents proud and be a paediatrician one day.”

AT just 12 years old Kimara Reddy, a Grade 7 Sagewood Preparatory School pupil is excelling in all facets of life.

Kimara has a list of achievements as tall as she is in both sport and academics.

She has received certificates of excellence in English and Afrikaans poetry and has held the first place position in her grade annually since starting at Sagewood when she was in Grade 2.

Kimara is also inclined to sport, with a deep love for netball and hockey and she excels in chess having won three tournaments already.

A wordsmith of note, she also received a certificate of achievement in the Travelling Spelling Bee contest.

She boasts outstanding academic achievements in Grade 6, having received all the subject awards, a certificate for 100% attendance at school and a gold certificate with distinction for speech and drama.

The all-rounder loves reading and reciting poetry and excels in public speaking, and notably she was chosen to present her self-designed project on the solar system in front of the entire school.

Kimara said she is very ambitious and works smartly to achieve her goals. “I am self motivated and I make sure any task given to me is done to the best of my ability. I want to become a software engineer one day and I will persevere to make my dreams come true.

“My hopes for high school is to do much better than in primary school, work hard, stay away from peer pressure, be independent and get seven distinctions so I [am able] to get a bursary to study further. I want to take care of my family.”

AT just six years old Noah Moonsamy has eloquently entered Grade 1 at Stanger Manor Primary School after being selected to deliver his classes Grade R graduation speech at the end of last year.

Noah has been described as a quick study, being the only child in his class who was able to learn the speech and deliver it with confidence and eloquence in front of his classmates, parents and guests at the year end graduation ceremony.

According to Noah’s mom, Leantha he is an avid reader and enjoys speaking and entertaining people.

Apart from academics, Noah also excels in sport and he recently achieved his yellow belt in karate. He is hopeful that he will be able to achieve his black belt while still in school.

He also loves soccer and knows all the clubs and top players as well as which country they are from.

Noah is also very ambitious and is ever-willing to try out new adventures, and despite being a bit shy at times, loves to conquer his fears and forge forward.

Speaking about how he was able to learn the speech when the other children couldn’t, Noah said he spent time everyday with his grandpa who used to read it back to him.

“My memory is very good, it is like a sponge,” he said.

He is an avid converser, making equal efforts for people both young and old.

“I love to make people laugh and happy!” He said seeing his family happy and smiling and being proud of him is inspirational for him.

“I love that they are proud of me especially teaching my younger brother different activities.”  He said he hopes to do as well in Grade 1 as he did last year and make it to give the year end speech again.

ASPIRING maths fundi, Amelia Rose Moodley is a 15-year-old Grade 10 pupil at Glenhills Secondary School.

Amelia has had a growing love for mathematics from a young age and achieved the silver medal in the Lower Tugela Maths Challenge.

She is also academically inclined and has excelled in both primary and secondary school and has scooped multiple awards.

She is a steady A aggregate pupil and was awarded for this achievement last year.

An avid reader, Amelia leans towards non-fiction and inspirational literature which she gleans nuggets of inspiration from for her daily life.

Amelia has a curious mind and is never afraid to ask questions which she feels is a reason for her success academically. She is always aiming high, according to her mom Martha.

She attributes her success to dedication, commitment to hitting the books after school everyday and never being fearful of asking her teachers about what she does not understand.

Amelia is also a brilliant public speaker who speaks boldly and affirmatively.

Speaking about what drives her, Amelia said the community around her and standard of living inspires her to work hard so that her standard of living can improve.

She hopes to excel in her academic studies so that she can get funding to study further.

She expressed gratefulness to her teachers and family for their support and helping her with aspects she does not understand and to God for granting her wisdom and helping her through all these years.

Valedictory honours for Chloe

THE definition of a valedictorian is a pupil who has the highest scores in his or her graduating class and who makes a speech at the graduation ceremony, which Chloe Pillay was for her graduating class last year.

The 13-year-old Grade 8 pupil at Stanger Manor Secondary School is hopeful that her academic year will be as successful, if not more successful, than last year.

Her list of achievements include being head girl for 2022, all the subject awards and the good fellowship and the Dux awards last year. She has achieved awards since Grade 1 and she was selected to present the valedictory speech in which she encouraged her fellow pupils to go forth and conquer.

“I put my mind to what I have to do and I am ambitious. I owe all that I am to my parents since listening to their advice as well as the advice of my teachers has ensured that I reach these great heights. I also make sure to do all my tasks timeously at school and at home.”

Speaking about her valedictory speech, she said she has always enjoyed speaking before an audience.

“It started off in class, when it was speech assessment time, I was always excited and also reading to the teacher for marks. From there I started doing speech and poetry contests and I really got into it.”

She said her father is her inspiration because he is independent and hardworking.

Chloe’s hope for high school is to excel academically and achieve awards which will contribute to her tertiary success.
