Bless your pets at Durban North church service

The ceremony will see pets receive individual blessings, to honour the bond between humans and animals and celebrate God's creation.

ST Martin’s Church is inviting the community to attend their Pet Blessing Service on Saturday, April 18 at the church (12 Chelsea Drive, Durban North) at 09:00.

Residents are welcome to bring their pets (big and small) for a special blessing and share in the service of thanksgiving for all life.

Mount Edgecombe resident and congregant of the church, Val Hutchinson, said the idea was pitched by fellow congregant David King and herself.

“This comes from the life of St. Francis of Assisi who had profound love for nature and all creatures. Around his feast day, churches hold ceremonies where pets receive individual blessings, to honour the bond between humans and animals and celebrate God’s creation,” Hutchinson explained.

Reverend Andrew Warmback will lead a short service while Reverend Andile Nyoni will bless the individual pets.

Local resident Monique Galliers-Ward will also give a talk on animals.

“Pets are a huge part of everyone’s lives and we hope that this will grow into an annual event. We would like to extend an invite to everyone in Durban North and people are welcome to bring their pets. You don’t have to be a member of the church to attend for anyone who wants their pet blessed or to remember their pet as a memorial dedication,” she said.

There will also be a raffle and the Durban & Coast SPCA will host a tea garden at the church. Those attending are encouraged to bring a can of pet food that will be donated.
